Last minute trip to Cairo, Egypt 15th - 19th November

So Mum and I arrived into Greece on 14th Nov greeted by bad weather. With 11 days up our sleeves we decided to check out some travel agents to see what it would cost to take a quick trip to Egypt. Less than 24 hrs later we were flying out of Athens on our way to Cairo, Egypt.....now thats travelling lastminute.com! Nothing could ever have prepared us for what would await us in Cairo. We were both heavily sleep deprived after spending an entire day touring around Athens, flying out that night to Cairo and not checking into our hotel in Cairo till the next morning. We got harrassed by every man and his mate at Cairo Airport and to be completely frank we had fears for our safety! It was all good tho as we've survived (and are out of there). We had every experience one could hope for in a quick trip to Cairo. We learnt to Walk Like Egyptians and play russian roulette with the traffic, caught the Metro with the locals, ate their food, checked out the Pyramids on Camels and did a cruise of the River Nile, found a post office (laugh as you may but this was easier said than done!!) bargained with every man and his camel, learnt abit of lingo, got ripped off, picked up about 12 new brothers (they liked to call me 'my sister'), oh and the best deal of all....Mum was offered up to 15 camels for my hand in marriage (shes thinking about it!) oh, and visited a museum and mosque and did a spot of shopping.

Me on the free internet terminal at Athens Airport

Our luggage safely rigged up to a table in our room! We left them this way each day we went out! The hotel staff thought this was HILARIOUS!!!!

Our trip to the Pyramids via the 'back/local' entry, on board a Camel each and with our own guides!! (Cost 300 Egyptian Pounds in total for 3 hours = $80NZ)

Sunset shots from backblocks of the Pyramids.

Shots from our boat on the River Nile Cruise!
Ma & I outside the Egyptian Museum where King Tutankamen rests (although when we were there his mummified form was on tour in London....which we were going to see when we were there, still got to see his fancy box....sorry i'm tired and can't remember the name)

Ma & I in Citadel at the Mohammed Ali Mosque.

Fancy scaffholding we spotted on walking through the Souk (market) . Sure OSH would have something to say about this! Best part of all is the workmen wear bare-feet!

And it wouldn't be right of me to not take a photo of a local and her baby (at the souk)!

Traffic mayhem seen from the back of a Taxi.
Look closely between the two buildings, you will see how the Egyptians dry their clothes.
On return to our room one night we found our beds made up complete with towels folded into hearts......a treatment reserved for Constructively Complaining VIP guests such as ourselves!!! (we changed our room once and reported daily floods of our bathroom!!!, we developed quite a reputation!!!)
2nd trip to the Pyramids, Ma feeling on top of the world as has dreamed of seeing these almighty structures.
Pyramids and Sphinx at night under the light and sound show.
........So in a nutshell, that was Egypt. We are pleased to report that we made it out of there in one piece and will take those memories with us for ever and ever, I think its fair to say that no ones life is complete without a trip to Cairo, Egypt! Highly recommend it and good therapy for the light-hearted! Next trip Greece and the Islands (Naxos and Santorini).....until then xxx
